To honor this progressive and sustainable source of power, Toyota has unveiled the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, which is currently open to guests at its Research & Development center in Michigan.
Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy
Brought to life by a collaboration involving Toyotaās Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this marvelous exhibit seamlessly merges solar mechanics with bold color choices. Rather than just offering visual appeal, the project actively harvests power. Gathering diverse forms of green energy is critical to preserving our modern way of living as finite fossil fuel reserves decline.
Built as a 1/6th-scale prototype, this carbon-neutral and self-reliant structure comprises 11 distinct triangular columns. Through the clever deployment of lenticular lenses, its designers managed to mask the solar cells without compromising their power-collection efficiency. Put simply, the installation functions as both an eye-catching artwork and a useful environmental innovation that generates actual power.
The development of this remarkable design dates back quite a while. Even though the official directive for the project occurred in 2020, the core technology was under development for over ten years. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, who serves as a senior principal scientist within the Materials Research Department, mentioned that TMC began analyzing nanotechnology-based dynamic color pigments 12 years ago with the ultimate goal of deploying them in solar fields.
While funded primarily by TMC, APPO championed the project for the North American sector, handling economic resources and pushing for its ultimate commercial deployment. Currently, this Vivid color-coated panel system can be implemented within conventional solar fields while retaining over 90% of the original performance capabilities.
Co-project leader Brian Woods is equally thrilled to watch the Vivid Solar project come to life. "When looking at the potential for both signage and promotional displays, the return on investment for this tech is substantial," he explains, adding that this setup blends a green power system with limitless corporate marketing capabilities.
