Toyota Safety Sense exists because Toyota prioritized safety well before creating one of the world’s most celebrated driver-assist systems. The company operates a dedicated division focused on driving safety innovation forward. In 2011, Toyota established its Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC), placing a strong focus on mobility safety. Since then, the CSRC has partnered with universities, hospitals, and leading experts to study ways to reduce crash injuries, understand driver behavior, and prevent accidents. The impact has been remarkable.

Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project

Toyota’s CSRC is deeply committed to studying collision mitigation. Since collisions can be life-threatening, any progress in protecting vehicle occupants helps advance automotive safety. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that its collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab marked the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.

Commenting on this achievement, CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov said, “This is a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” The partnership with MIT examined how drivers and pedestrians interact with technologies like mobile phones and in-car touchscreens.

The 100th project, led in part by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, showcased the extensive teamwork between Toyota and MIT. The research produced important findings, including a dataset on voice-based human-machine interaction and driver-pedestrian behavior. The team also explored how driver-assist features influence behavior and observed how drivers manage tasks unrelated to driving.

Always looking ahead, Toyota’s research center has already outlined its next 10 projects. Future partnerships will include work with the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is celebrating this key milestone while exploring how the latest insights can help make driving even safer for customers.
