Let’s face it. Parenting is rewarding – but it can also be hard. And with all the things that moms and dads handle, the last thing they should have to worry about is fussing around with child safety seat mounts.
That’s why Toyota has been making changes to its LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system. The changes have improved the process of installing child seats and earned the automaker a new accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
“While our LATCH systems have always met or exceeded federal safety standards, I know as a parent myself of two young boys that installing a child safety seat is not always an easy task,” said Jennifer Pelky, senior engineer at the Toyota Technical Center and a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.
Toyota is already a rock star in terms of automotive safety, being the car manufacturer with the most Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ titles from the IIHS. Recently, the automaker received yet another honor from the independent research company when it received the highest possible score of Good+ for Child Safety Ease-of-Use on the 2016 Toyota Prius.
Pelky played a role in improving the company’s LATCH system, which now features larger openings for easier access to the lower anchors and more easily identifiable top tethers that now have large black-and-white, high-contrast labels.
