Almost a year ago, Toyota announced that they would be supplying used Camry Hybrid battery packs to Yellowstone National Park in order to help power the Lamar Buffalo Ranch campus. Fast forward a year later and now the zero emission energy system is officially up and running, bringing power to Buffalo Ranch for the first time in over 100 years and promoting sustainability.
"Through our long-standing partnership with Yellowstone National Park and the Yellowstone Park Foundation, Toyota has helped preserve Yellowstone for future generations," said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer, Toyota North America. "Today, our relationship with Yellowstone continues, as more than 200 battery packs that once powered Toyota Camry hybrids have found a new home on the range."
A total of 208 used Camry Hybrid battery packs are being used to power Buffalo Ranch. Solar panels generate electricity stored in the packs for five buildings on the campus, which are used for educational purposes at Yellowstone. In time, onsite micro-hydro turbine systems that utilize energy from a nearby stream will become a source of power as well, benefiting everyone at Buffalo Ranch.
