Volvo Engine Not Working
Ā

Sometimes car problems can creep up out of nowhere, but other times you can detect problems and fix them before they become more significant. If your vehicle is not starting, it may be due to a minor problem that eventually worsens, such as a dying battery, or it might be a problem that starts quickly, such as a starter that breaks. Whatever the cause, you can sometimes figure out the issue on your own before contacting professionals for help.

Out of Gas

Ā

An empty gas tank is one of the top reasons why a car runs out of gas. If your vehicle's gas tank does not have a visual warning system to let you know when it is losing fuel, or if you don't get a warning message on the dashboard, it can be difficult to track the fuel level. Additionally, the problem might lie in the gas gauge itself, which can falsely indicate that the tank is filled above or below the actual level.

Battery Problems

Probably the top reason for a car not to work is the battery. To rule out a battery problem, you can try giving the car a jump-start in the driveway. If the car starts after a jump, the battery is a likely cause. The battery should last for about 60,000 miles or five years before it needs to be changed. A technician can test the battery's level at each service interval to see how much power is remaining. You can also check the battery's power level on your own.

Clogged Fuel Filter

Ā Ā

Your car's engine has a fuel filter that is designed to only allow clean and fresh fuel into the fuel lines. The fuel filter will last up to about 20,000 miles before it needs to be changed. If your car seems sluggish or you can't remember the last time the fuel filter was replaced, a technician will check the fuel filter to see if it needs cleaning.

Broken Starter

Ā

The starter is a component that works in tandem with the engine to ensure your car runs smoothly. If the starter breaks, the car won't start up when you put the key in the ignition. This happens because the starter can't send voltage from the battery to the engine. You may hear a telltale clicking sound if the starter breaks as well.

Bad Ignition Switch

Ā

The ignition switch generally sends a spark to the engine that signals it to turn over. The switch can break from wear and tear, which means you'll need to bring it to a technician.
