Car Not Accelerating

Ā

Four Common Reasons Why Your Car Isn't Accelerating Properly

In situations like going uphill or merging onto a busy highway, if a vehicle is lacking the ability to pick up speed, it can notĀ only be frustrating, but dangerous too. Though there are many reasons a vehicle may not be accelerating properly, we've compiled some pretty common ones to watch out for.

Dirty Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) or Oxygen Sensor

If your vehicle's mass air flow sensor or oxygen sensor is dirty, it can influence how accurately the air fuel mixture of your vehicle is being monitored. This inaccuracy could throw off vehicle performance, including acceleration and fuel consumption. Typically the mass air flow sensor can be cleaned by our certified technicians, but the oxygen sensor may need an actual replacement. Either one can cause a check engine light to appear, but in general if that light is on we encourage you to bring it to our dealership for a professional diagnosis.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

The Throttle Position Sensor or TPS monitors the throttle valve opening angle to give your engine's computer info on how to adjust. When it isn't able to read the throttle position accurately, it will send incorrect info that will cause the vehicle's performance to degrade, including the ability to accelerate properly.

Clogged Fuel Filter

Fuel filters can become clogged, allowing for dirt and debris to build up in your gas tank. This obstruction begins a downward spiral of performance. If something is blocking fuel from reaching your engine, you'll notice difficulty accelerating in moments on the road, especially uphill or when there's an angle to the vehicle.

Dirty Air Filters

Over time the engine air filter will need to be replaced in intervals. If it is not, that can prevent the engine from getting enough airflow due to a buildup of dirt and debris. This can prevent your vehicle from being able to increase speed quickly. For best practices it's usually best to consult your owner's manual to determine how often the engine air filter should be replaced.

If your vehicle is accelerating poorly, this can cause more than frustration.Ā Don't let this issue go unchecked. Get in touch with our professionals here at our dealership to identify the culprit behind your acceleration problem. You can schedule online, give us a call, or stop by in person.

EV Tax Credit & Charger Incentives

Federal EV Tax Credit
Federal incentives for electric vehicles are changing. The Clean Vehicle Credit, which can provide up to $7,500 in tax savings, is scheduled to end on September 30, 2025, unless extended. A separate credit for home EV charger installation will expire on June 30, 2026. If you're planning to purchase a Toyota EV or plug-in hybrid, it’s important to act while the credits are still available.
