Distracted driving is increasingly becoming a major problem due to the onslaught of new handheld tech products being released across the market, and as this continues, more automakers are taking steps to help deter the dangerous practice. Toyota is the latest company to work towards combating distracted driving by patenting a technology that could keep track of drivers' eyes while in the car. The solution could be beneficial if used on future cars, keeping drivers safe on the road.

Toyota's distracted driving technology works by utilizing a camera to monitor a driver's eyelids in order to determine how wide their eyes are open. The technology can also detect when red eye occurs, prompting the camera to rescan an individual and determine the correct location of the eyes. Although a fascinating technology, Toyota has not revealed how they plan to utilize the system in the future. For now, they continue to work on developing the technology and record their findings along the way.

In addition to Toyota's patented distracted driving system, the company recently debuted a driving simulator also designed to deter distracted driving as a part of their TeenDrive365 program.
