Toyota currently leads all other automakers with nine Top Safety Pick+ awards from the IIHS! Criteria to earn the awards is even tougher this year, but Toyota proved it’s up to the challenge.

Top Safety Pick+ is the highest honor given by the IIHS and it’s earned not only by receiving top scores in five crashworthiness tests, but also by earning a “superior” or “advanced” score in front crash prevention. New this year, models also had to earn an “acceptable” or “good” rating for headlight quality in order to receive the Plus designation.

For the third consecutive year, Toyota has surpassed its competitors in earning the most IIHS awards, and popular models like the Corolla, Camry and RAV4 are part of the reason why. Other 2017 Top Safety Pick+ winners include the Prius v and standard Prius (models built after August 2016). Four models from Toyota’s luxury arm also won honors.

We can’t forget about the 2017 Toyota Yaris iA and Toyota Avalon, either. Both won Top Safety Pick titles, the next best honor given by the IIHS. This award was tougher to get as well, since the IIHS now requires the same front crash prevention tests as it does for its Top Safety Pick+ awards.
